(7) Restoring Margins
Restoring margins is the opposite of overload and burnout. I have a hard time opposing this culture which seems to fight margins, promote noise, intrude with information and fill every second with activities for gaining status or leisure.
I’m finding that in order to defend my margins, I have to disconnect and create intentional solitude. The beach is the most coveted place for me to do that. My most relaxing vacations have been on the beach when I’ve left my watch in the bedside drawer. My sense of rest and refreshment de-toxifies my mind and I’m quiet.
This piece is an expression of that refreshment, but it also is a picture of the rest that comes from knowing God and believing His word to be true. I find even if I’m at the beach and my heart is anxious, I have no rest. The world’s intrusive voices say the clock is most important and that it all depends on me. No, it depends on my daily practice of pursuing God and believing He is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent.

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
